One of the biggest mistakes artists make when trying to build a business is thinking that wanting it badly enough is the same as deciding to do it.
It isn’t.
Here are three keys that separate the artists who make it from the ones who stay stuck.
Key #1: Decide.
Not “try.” Decide.
People try to quit smoking every day and fail — not because they lack willpower, but because they never made a firm, non-negotiable decision. The same is true for building an art career. Trying leaves you a way out. Deciding doesn’t.
You have to make the choice — clearly, consciously, and completely — that you are going to be an artist. Not someday. Now. And then you take the next step. And the next. The decision comes first. Everything else follows from it.
Key #2: Think Like a Business Owner.
Once you’ve decided, you have to shift how you see yourself and your work.
You are not just a painter. You are someone who creates a product, markets it, and makes sales. Full stop.
I know that can feel uncomfortable. Many artists resist it — “I can’t sell,” “I don’t know anything about marketing,” “I just want to paint what I want.” And that’s fine. But that’s a hobby, not a business. There’s no judgment in that — hobbies are beautiful. But if you want to earn a living from your art, you have to be willing to think like someone who runs a business, not just someone who loves to create.
That means understanding your audience. Knowing what your work offers them. Showing up consistently. Learning what you don’t yet know. It’s not about becoming a pushy salesperson — it’s about taking your gift seriously enough to share it with intention.
Key #3: Find Your Fire.
If Key #1 is the decision and Key #2 is the mindset, Key #3 is the fuel.
To succeed as an artist, you need more than talent. You need a passionate drive that keeps you creating, questioning, and showing up — even when things feel messy, slow, or uncertain. Because they will. There will be weeks when nothing sells, when the algorithm ignores you, when you wonder if any of it is worth it.
Your fire is what gets you through those weeks.
And here’s the truth: you cannot become more than you are today without change. Growth requires discomfort. It requires showing up before you feel ready. It requires believing in what you’re building even when the results haven’t caught up yet.
That fire — that refusal to quit — is not something anyone can give you. But it can be fed. The right community, the right guidance, and the right support can make all the difference.
