The Journey of the Artist: Embracing Passion and Purpose
From a young age, we’re often encouraged to pursue practical careers that promise stability and security. And then there’s the common “starving artist” myth—the idea that creativity equals struggle, with artists portrayed as tortured souls sacrificing everything for their art.
But I believe there are plenty of tortured souls who aren’t artists at all. The real struggle for many artists often lies in the fear and doubt fueled by these very ideas. Everyone faces moments of uncertainty or a restless mind, but the artist’s true challenge is to overcome the belief that creativity must come with suffering.
Contrary to the myth, many artists do find success. Success doesn’t just mean fame or achieving a career goal—it can also mean finding balance between your creative life and your personal life or actively building your career while working. The notion that you must suffer to create great art is not only outdated, but it’s also counterproductive.
The Role of Passion and Purpose
At the core of every artist’s journey is a deep passion for their art. Passion drives us to create, to push boundaries, and to express our unique perspectives. Early on, I was conditioned to think I needed a “practical” career. I became a Graphic Designer, and then, after having my second child, I realized freelance work could provide financial stability while still allowing me to be a full-time mom.
Even then I was still attached to the idea of creating art for income rather than a deeper purpose. It wasn’t until I decided to follow my true passion that I found a deeper sense of purpose. This new sense of purpose brought far more fulfillment than just earning a paycheck—it became a way to connect with others and provide something they truly needed. This is when I found true financial success.
Finding Joy in the Journey
It’s often said that the most rewarding part of being an artist is the joy of the creative process. Whether it’s painting, writing, or any form of creation, every step is an opportunity to connect with your inner self or divine intelligence. And while creating is deeply satisfying, what’s truly rewarding is how your work can touch others in meaningful ways.
Practical Strategies for Success
While passion and purpose are essential, practical strategies are key to sustaining a career in the arts. This includes developing a solid business plan, marketing your work, and honing your skills. Many artists find success by diversifying their income—teaching, freelancing, or selling work online. By combining creativity with business savvy, any artist can build a rewarding, sustainable career.
Inspiring the Next Generation
By challenging the myth of the starving artist, we can inspire the next generation to pursue their creative passions without fear. It’s vital to encourage young artists to take risks, explore their talents, and believe in the value of their work. In doing so, we can create a world where art is not only celebrated but also seen as the viable, fulfilling career path that it is. This is why I created a Patreon page, teaching other artists the shifts in mindset that allow for the kind of success they may be looking.
The Power of Art in Society
Art has the power to inspire, provoke thought, and bring people together. It reflects the human experience in all its beauty and complexity, transcending cultural and societal boundaries. By supporting artists, we enrich our communities and deepen our understanding of the world around us. I feel as though it is an extension of my purpose to help other artists understand what they have to offer the world… and to know the world is waiting for it!
Conclusion
The artist’s journey is about passion, purpose, and perseverance. It’s about challenging the conventional ideas of the life of artists, finding joy in the creative process, and redefining success on your own terms. Embrace the path, and you’ll not only live a fulfilling life, but leave a meaningful legacy. Let go of the myth of the starving artist and embrace the dynamic, rewarding life of the true artist.
